While their feelings deepen, the stalker becomes more verbally aggressive than previously, and starts showing up at Cilla’s house and private gigs she hosts. Accepting her attraction to Boyd would mean dealing with the scars of her divorce and the insecurities that have plagued her ever since. Ignoring Boyd’s advances is not as easy as Cilla would have liked, because she actually feels something for the first time in ages for a man. Cilla is somewhat daunted by Althea’s staggering beauty and Boyd’s easy charm and obvious interest.

The police arrive in the forms of detectives Althea Grayson and Boyd Fletcher. Eventually, her station manager decides to call in the help of the police – wisely ignoring the DJ’s protest that she can handle it herself. She is promised death as retribution for her crimes, but Cilla has no idea what these crimes could possibly be. Telling herself that it was a onetime thing, she receives more phone calls and it quickly becomes a nightly occurrence. Cilla’s illusion of safety is shattered one night when she receives a threatening phone call through the station’s caller program.

She gets to be with her music and be alone, which she likes best, and can still take care of her younger sister Deborah who is studying to become a lawyer. But, that’s just me….Rising DJ Cilla O’Roarke loves her late night shows on radio station KHIP. For the most part, Night Shift is a weak effort, in my opinion.

Kate Rudd narration is okay, nothing special, but listenable. About 70% of the story is devoted to the come-hither-get-away romance, 30% to the stalker mystery. He’s calling a late night radio personality and threatening her life. There is a bad-guy out there, stalking and terrifying.

That said, also very typical of Nora Roberts, the fundamentals are there for an interesting procedural. It would be funnier if the characters weren’t so stereotypical. Sound familiar? 'You Tarzan, me stupid” is actually phrase in the book … meh. The female lead is vulnerable, swooney, with transparent infusions of inner strength mixed with girly-virginal dependence. The type-A cop is strong, gritty, handsome, hunky, patronizing. Both main characters come across as over-the-top and sweaty romance-novel corny. Character development is problematic with this story. The audiobook version of Night Shift is just over seven hours of listening, narrated by Kate Rudd.
